Best of Bootie mashup
I have to give credit for this find to Bren, but I’ll take the glory of posting it
You know what a mashup is, right kids? Wikipedia talks about four various types of mashups, but I’ll give you some love on the music variety.
I didn’t know this until reading the Wikipedia entry, but there is a long history of musical mashups. It’s interesting to see that Frank Zappa was even involved in some early forms of it.
Up until about a year ago I had only heard a few mashups on the radio. Then one day, when Bren was a squatter in my office, he told me about Best of Bootie 2006. Oh, yeah, and you can download it right from the website.
The rest of that afternoon was shot as I listened to those tracks. And one of the best things is they give you the tracks that were considered but didn’t make the cut for the final album. IMHO, the best song for that album didn’t even make the cut (You’re The One That I Want In The Next Episode, a mix of Olivia Newton-John & John Travolta [Grease] vs. Dr. Dre & Snoop Dogg). Other tracks include Jay-Z vs. Frankie Valli & the Four Seasons, Beastie Boys vs. Led Zeppelin, and Run-DMC vs. Metallica.
Best of Bootie 2007 came out a little while ago, and it keeps the mashup train rolling. For all three albums (2005 - 2007), as with any album, there are low and high points, but these should definitely be on your list of albums to get (especially since you can get them for free).

As advanced as BigDog is, it’s amazing to see where they got the technology…

gender
This morning I had a conversation with my female assistant, we’ll call her Hannah, that went something like this:
Hannah: “Do you know what show I like?”
Me: ”No.”
Hannah: ”Dancing with the Stars.”
Me: ”Ha ha ha ha ha ha. That’s funny. Why do you like that show?”
Hannah: ”I like to watch people dance and Christi Yamaguchi is one of the dancers.”
Me: “…and…”
Hannah: ”You remember who Christi Yamaguchi is don’t you.”
Me: ”Of course I remember who she is I was older than six when the Olympics were played.”
The conversation went on for another five minutes or so but you get the picture. I just finished a doctorate class on Biblical perspectives on gender where we spent most of the time debating whether or not there are actually any differences between men and women. Case and point.

BigDog Boston Scientific DARPA DARPA Grand Challenge
The militaries of the world are behind some of the most fascinating technological developments (e.g. the computer). The US Department of Defense has an agency within it, DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency), that not only birthed the internet, but is continuing to do, and sponsor, some amazing things.
First, there is the DARPA Grand Challenge, which is an event where groups (mostly universities) build artificially intelligent cars that race through an obstacle course. This is probably the most widely known project that the DARPA group is working on.
I saw another DARPA project a while ago, and found myself talking about it again recently. Boston Scientific is working on a quadruped robot known as BigDog. Absolutely bizarre. Check out the video of it in action, and try not to be scared and amazed at the same time.

Tenacious D
A few months ago I woke up with a random song in my head, and a single line of lyrics in my head. As happens from time to time, I continued to dwell on that thought (lyric) while showering. My wife says I take too long of showers, but that’s a topic for another post. Anyways, in the shower that morning my thought came to a lightbulb moment.
“Nay, we are but men. Rock!” That’s the lyric in question. It comes to us by Tenacious D, in their song Tribute. That lightbulb moment is what has turned into this blog.
Not only is the song a GREAT song, they made a very excellent video out of it. Enjoy.

Taking a fastball off the chin is not on my list of things to do. Nor was it on umpire Kerwin Danley’s list either, I’m sure.

Florida Truck Nutz
The brilliant people in the Florida State Legislature have a rousing topic before them. Some of them feel like it should be made law that people not be allowed to display their vehicles gender in a specific way.
While I don’t think that Truck Nutz are very classy, it is beyond silly that they are looking to outlaw them. Seriously, you have nothing better to debate? No debates on immigration? No talk of health care, or the rising cost of fuel and food? Truck Nutz are the biggest problem plaguing Florida right now? Are you kidding me?
The best is hearing it on Wait Wait…Don’t Tell Me (the audio clip is in Panel Round Two). ”They are increasingly popular among drivers of pickups, SUVs, and other manly vehicles, which apparently are not already compensation enough.”
Every pun in this post was intended.
